Jules Mazarin , born 14 July 1602 in Pescina in Abruzzi in Italy , died 9 March 1661 in Vincennes in France , was cardinal and France's first minister from 1642 until his death. His name was actually Giulio Mazarini and descended from a Sicilian family. He studied in Rome and at the Spanish universities of Alcalá de Henares and Salamanca .
