Dionysius Lardner was born in Dublin, Ireland. He was an Irish scientific writer who popularised science and technology, and edited the 133-volume Cabinet Cyclopædia. He obtained a B.A. in 1817 and an M.A. in 1819. In 1828 he was elected professor of natural philosophy and astronomy at University College, London. He wrote hand-books on various departments of natural philosophy; but it is as the editor of Lardner's Cabinet Cyclopaedia that he is best remembered. The Cabinet Library and the Museum of Science and Art were his other chief undertakings.
