Jerome Kohlberg, Jr. was born in New York City, New York, USA. He was an American businessman and early pioneer in the private equity and leveraged buyout industries founding private equity firm Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and later Kohlberg & Company. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. He earned a BA degree from Swarthmore College in 1946. He earned an MBA degree from Harvard Business School and Bachelor of Laws degree from Columbia Law School. In 1986, he founded the Philip Evans Scholarship Foundation at Swarthmore.
