Johannes Peter Muller was born in Koblenz, Germany. He was a German physiologist, known not only for his discoveries but also for his ability to synthesize knowledge. His major work was Elements of Physiology. He earned his MD degree from the University of Bonn in 1819. He continued his studies at the University of Berlin, where he came under the influence of the sober, precise anatomist Karl Rudolphi and thereby freed himself from naturalistic speculation. In 1824, he was granted a lectureship in physiology and comparative anatomy at the University of Bonn. In 1826 he was appointed associate professor, and in 1830 he became a full professor. He wrote several books include: Systematische Beschreibung der Plagiostomen, and System der Asteriden.
