Hugo Grotius, also known as Huig de Groot was born in Delft, Netherlands. He was a Dutch jurist whose masterpiece De Jure Belli ac Pacis is considered one of the greatest contributions to the development of international law. Also a statesman and diplomat, he has been called the “father of international law.” He studied at the University of Leiden. In 1607, he was appointed attorney general of the provinces of Holland, Zeeland, and West Friesland. He wrote several books include: Christus patiens, Mare Liberum, On the Law of War and Peace, The truth of the Christian religion, On the rights of war and peace, Commentary on the law of prize and booty, and The Freedom of the Seas.
