James Ball Naylor was born in Penn Township, Morgan County, Ohio, USA. He was an American physician, poet and author of several novels on frontier life. He earned his medical doctor degree from Starling Medical college, Columbus in 1886. Early in his career he was an editorial writer for the Marion Star and the Chicago Journal of Commerce. He wrote several novels include: Ralph Marlowe, In the Days of St. Clair, and Under Mad Anthony's Banner. His last book was "Vagrant Verse" published in 1935.
