Henry Charles Carey was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA. He was an economist of the American School of capitalism, and chief economic adviser to U.S. President Abraham Lincoln. He is best known for the book The Harmony of Interests: Agricultural, Manufacturing, and Commercial. In 1825, he succeeded his father in the publishing firm, which became Carey & Lea, attaining a leading position in America. In 1835, he co-founded the famous Franklin Fire Insurance Company of Philadelphia. He wrote other books include: Essays on Political Economy, Principles of Political Economy, Principles of Social Science, and The Unity of Law.
