About
Jean-Paul Marat was born in Boudry, Switzerland. He was a French physician, journalist, politician and a leader of the radical Montagnard faction during the French Revolution. He was assassinated in his bath by Charlotte Corday, a young Girondin conservative. In his death, Marat became an icon to the Jacobins as a revolutionary martyr, as portrayed in Jacques-Louis David's famous painting, The Death of Marat. His Essay on the Human Soul had little success, but A Philosophical Essay on Man was translated into French and published in Amsterdam. He earned his MD degree from the University of St Andrews in June 1775.
