Henri Michaux was born in Namur, Belgium. He was a Belgian-born French poet and painter who wrote in French. He is best known for his esoteric books written in a highly accessible style. He first drew critical notice with his poetry collection Who I Was. He also wrote several travelogues, including A Barbarian in Asia. His first painting exhibition was held in 1937. Many of Michaux’s later books— including Light Through Darkness and Miserable Miracle.
