Gertrude Himmelfarb, also known as Bea Kristol was born in Brooklyn, New York City, USA. She is an American historian. She has been a leader of conservative interpretations of history and historiography. She has written extensively on intellectual history, with a focus on Britain and the Victorian era. She received her undergraduate degree from Brooklyn College in 1942 and her doctorate from the University of Chicago in 1950. She is a Fellow of the British Academy. She is a leading defender of traditional historical methods and practices. She has written several books include: Victorian minds, Darwin and the Darwinian Revolution, On liberty and liberalism, The idea of poverty, The new history and the old, On Looking Into the Abyss, The de-moralization of society, The Roads to Modernity, and The Spirit of the Age. In 2004 she received the National Humanities Medal awarded by the President.
