Georgia Elma Harkness was born in Harkness, New York, USA. She was an American Christian theologian, professor, and writer. She has been described as one of the first significant American female theologians and was important in the movement to gain ordination for women in American Methodism. She earned a B.A. in philosophy from Cornell University in 1912. She earned a Ph.D. in philosophy of religion from Boston University School of Theology in 1923 with a dissertation entitled, ” The Relations Between Philosophy of Religion and Ethics in the Thought of Thomas Hill Green.” She served as a Professor of applied theology at Garrett Biblical Institute from 1939–1950 and the Pacific School of Religion from 1950–1961. She wrote several books include: The Church and the Immigrant, Beliefs That Count, The dark night of the soul, Prayer and the Common Life, Toward Understanding the Bible, The providence of God, Women in church and society, and Understanding the Kingdom of God.
